Can I get a degree from the California Virtual Campus?

Students are able to earn degrees from many of the participating CVC campuses. CVC itself confers no degrees or certificates and, instead, serves as a gateway to technology-mediated distance learning courses and programs from California institutions.

How can I find the courses I want in the California Virtual Campus catalog?

Several search capabilities are available to help find courses of interest to you. Currently, you can search for classes by subject, school, or degree level.

How can I get additional information on the courses found in the California Virtual Campus catalog?

The CVC catalog links directly to the campuses offering each course. Use the link provided to find out more information regarding the offering.

How do I register for a course found in the California Virtual Campus catalog?

Participating CVC campuses use standard registration procedures for admittance. Once you find a course in which you want to enroll, you can use the links provided to contact the campus directly for admission reqirements, for acceptance and to pay fees.

How much do the courses cost?

Each participating campus establishes its own course fee schedule. You will need to contact the campus individually for specific course fee information.

How will I know how my courses transfer?

Please visit the Assist web page for information on course transferability to the the University of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU) systems. The Assist web page will also provide you with information on IGETC and CSU Certification.

Links are maintained by each school, and let’s face it, the web doesn’t stay still very long. Try the school’s main page and search for distance education or the course title.

I live in the Ukraine (or country of choice). Can I get a degree online from you?

The CVC lists distance courses, but does not offer them directly. Each institution decides how its courses are offered. Some could be taken anywhere, though others still require meetings on campus. Attending those meetings would be tough if you live in another country. Please check the web pages of the school which offers the course you are interested in.

If tests are required in an online class how will I know other students are not cheating?

You will find that classes will be using test facilities and test monitors, called proctors, in situations that require standardized testing in order to assign grades.

Is the California Virtual Campus catalog limited to public institutions?

No. Any accredited college or university based in California is eligible to participate in the California Virtual Campus catalog.

What is technology-mediated distance education?

Technology-mediated distance education means instruction in which student and instructor are separated when instruction takes place and interact through the assistance of one or more technologies, including computers, intructional television, video or teleconferencing.

Why are not trade and vocational schools part of this initiative? Or out-of-state schools?

In part, because California college and universities must pass a detailed evaluation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in order to become accredited. It is widely considered the most rigorous regional quality-control process in higher education in the United States. As for out-of-state institutions, this site is supported though public funds provided by California state government. Out-of-state schools must look for similar support to their own state authorities.

Will I automatically be accepted by any college or university listed on this site?

Not necessarily. Each campus has its own admissions and enrollment requirements. You will need to check with each campus for their admission procedures.

Will student aid be available?

Please contact individual campuses for more student aid information.

Why would I want to register an account on the CVC site?

See here.
