CVC Teaching Site Award — 2000

The California Virtual Campus presented Dennis O’Neil, PhD, of Palomar College the Best Online Teaching Website for academic year 2000 - 2001. Along with the award pictured, he was also presented with a check for $2,500. The award was sponsored by Pearson Education, whose publishing imprints include Addison Wesley Longman, Allyn & Bacon and Prentice Hall. The conference was held at the Resort at Squaw Creek, Lake Tahoe, from October 22-24, 2000. There were several Honorable Mentions presented with an award.

O”Neil is an online instructor at Palomar College. Our judges applaud his Physical Anthropology course for its simple, yet superb design, systematic approach to learning, ease of navigation, accessibility to disabled students, and interactivity. States one judge, “Dennis” online forum is buzzing with activity” and, regarding the instructional design of the site, “students learn a process–a process of learning that is reinforced in every lesson.”

In order to qualify for the award, a site must have been used for teaching an online course during some term in the calendar year, 2000. The award will ordinarily be given to the faculty member teaching the course. However, if other college staff have made substantial contributions to the development of the site, we will be happy to divide the prize in whatever manner seems fair to the nominees. Nominated websites will be judged on educational content, site design, use of multimedia, interactivity & community, and accessibility.

CVC Online Teaching Website Award 2000 Honorable Mentions Announced included the following:

  • Barbara Zingg, Las Positas College
  • Scott Vigallon, Las Positas College

We would appreciate your assisting us by nominating a site or sites that you think are especially effective online teaching sites. You will need to submit a separate nomination for each site you wish to nominate, and please be sure to list the names of all persons who should share the prize if this site is selected as the winner. Please note that the site must support a course offered during the 2000 calendar year and that the site must be online and accessible to our judges in the fall of 2000
