“Four years of state budget cuts at the University of California have led to a painful juncture for California students: Admissions for freshmen this fall have dropped by 7 percent from a year ago.
For the first time in four decades, UC officials were unable to admit all eligible students, instead offering 7,600 eligible students a guarantee to transfer as juniors if they complete two years of work at a community college.
The move was prompted by a request by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to cut UC’s freshman enrollment by 5 percent to help address the state’s financial crisis.
Throughout the UC system’s eight undergraduate campuses, just under 47,000 state residents were offered freshman admission this fall compared with more than 50,000 last year. Between 20 percent and 40 percent of students admitted typically enroll at UC campuses.
In addition to the fall admissions, 2,661 students were offered delayed admission for the winter or spring terms and 1,120 students who didn’t get into the engineering programs they applied to were offered the chance to study engineering at UC Riverside.”
